SQL Management Studio Express error code 29506

January 25th, 2010

So I was at work today (like any other day except the weekends ;) ) and the first thing what I did was installing some software that I need to use for software development. One of these applications is SQL Management Studio Express. When I tried to install SQL management studio 2k5 however, I got an error code 29506 near the end of the installation process and there was no other choice than to canel the install because the SQL Management Studio Express didn’t gave me any other option than to rollback the installation so I rolled it back.

I had never encountered this issue before so i had no idea how to get around it. I even tried reinstalling a few times and even checked my user permissions a few times although I logged in as an admin. Lucky for me there’s a site called google.com so i searched for “SQL Management Studio Express error code 29506″, “SQLServer2005_SSMSEE error code 29506″ and more variations like that and found the solution here.

To make a long story short, it turned out i had to click the “unblock” button to be able to install SQL server 2005 because Windows 7 thought the file might be harmful.  *rant* Typically Microsoft, i don’t want you guys to decide what software I want to install, when I want to install an application I really DO want to INSTALL it Period. */rant*

Anyway, here’s the fix: “Simply right-click the file and select “Properties”. At the bottom of the “General” tab, you should see a security message with an “Unblock” button:”

Finally bought myself an Asus N61JA-JX046X notebook

January 24th, 2010

asus_logo_thumbnailSo I finally decided to buy a notebook and I decided it to be an Asus N61JA-JX046X notebook running Windows 7 (64bit).

The specs of the notebook is pretty good and the notebook performs quite well with the Intel Core i5 430M processor, 4gb of ddr3 ram (2*2GB DDR3 1066mhz RAM) and 500gb of diskspace. Another thing is that the notebook is for sale for around 800+/1000′ish euro’s depending whether you buy it online or offline which isn’t a lot for a laptop in this class range.

asus_n61-n61vg-300x300So how are the gaming performance of the notebook? Well, the graphics card performance of the Radeon Mobility HD5730 is pretty good. With 3dmark06 a score around  7700/7800 points I can’t complain although I have to say I rarely play other games besides Eve online (which runs the game great at 50/60 average fps with everything set on the highest settings) but for testing purposes i’ve bought some games like need for speed shift, mass effect, kings bounty, supreme commander and a bunch of other games.

All these games run great with everything maxed out on the N61JA-JX046X but if you want to know the exact (average) fps then i need to get my hands on fraps and see what it says.

The notebook also doesn’t make any loud noises when under stress so that’s quite pleasing when compared to my older acer (acer aspire 5670) notebook.

Anyway, for a full review of the N61JA-JX046X you will have to wait a few days or a week or so until i give this guy a stress test and real life performance when bringing this guy to my work place and do some heavy programming and virtualization with it.

If you have a question about the notebook just let me know and I’ll try to answer your question the best I can.
